At the heart of all that we do is – education. Knowledge opens hearts and minds and fuels decision-making and action that can change lives.

We educate in many ways – through education seminars at churches, civic and senior centers, community-wide presentations, Lunch ‘n Learns and information tables at local festivals and gatherings.

Our Work

Our work falls into three buckets:
Prevention, Resolution and Land Utilization.

Prevention

We prevent the loss and growth of heirs’ property (HP) by:

  • Conducting free, community Wills Clinics to draft simple wills;
  • Conducting HP/SF education seminars that combine information on heirs' property (HP) issues and the Center’s sustainable forestry (SF) program to increase knowledge about the rights, risks and responsibilities of owning HP and its resolution, and how to manage land for timber to realize increased income;
  • Providing families with one free hour of legal consultation on their particular landownership issues, and
  • Probating estates within the 10 years required by SC law.

Resolution

We resolve HP title issues by:

  • Providing the full array of direct legal services needed for families to resolve the title issues on their land.

Land Utilization

We promote the sustainable use of land to benefit landowners economically by:

  • Providing forestry education and access to technical and financial assistance programs to help families develop and implement long term forest management plans on their land to increase the value and income from their land.
